If you're a veteran, first responder, or run a church or non-profit in the Houston area, we offer special pricing on roofing work. Not a gimmick. Not a token gesture. Real pricing that reflects genuine respect for what you do.
This isn't a post about shingles or cost breakdowns. It's personal. I'm Mike Terzo, and I want to tell you the story behind this company, what drives it, and why some of the work we're most proud of never made us a dime.
How Did the Coast Guard Shape Terzo Roofing?
Before I was a roofing contractor, I was a United States Coast Guard servicemember. That experience shaped everything about how I run this company.
I run a tight ship. The Coast Guard taught me discipline, communication, teamwork, perseverance, and devotion. Those aren't just words on a wall in our office. They're how we operate on every single job.
Discipline means we follow the manufacturer's installation specs on every roof. No shortcuts. No "that's close enough." When GAF or Tamko or Sika publishes an installation detail, that's the standard. Period.
Communication means I personally talk with every client before work begins. What to expect with material delivery. How the crew will mobilize. The construction process. Clean-up. Post-job documentation. And I'm always available if questions come up, because that's what accountability looks like.
Teamwork means our crews work as coordinated units, not a bunch of individuals doing their own thing on the same roof. Everyone knows the plan. Everyone knows their role.
Perseverance means we don't quit when a job gets complicated. Houston roofing is hard. The heat is brutal, storms are relentless, and the detail work around penetrations, valleys, and flashings requires patience. We don't rush because it's 97 degrees and everyone wants to go home.
That's the Coast Guard in me. It's not something I had to learn when I started this company. I carried it over from a life of service.
Why Do Veterans and First Responders Get Special Pricing?
Simple. They serve us, so we serve them.
Military veterans, active-duty servicemembers, first responders, police, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics. These people put themselves on the line for the rest of us. They do hard, dangerous, often thankless work so we can go about our lives in safety. I know what that commitment costs because I've lived it.
When a veteran or first responder calls us about a roof, we offer meaningful pricing that reflects genuine respect for their service.
Here's the thing most people don't realize: these men and women almost never ask for a discount. That's not how they're wired. They're used to serving, not being served. So we make a point of asking. "Are you a veteran? Active military? First responder?" And when they say yes, we tell them what we can do.
It's not about marketing. It's about taking care of the people who take care of everyone else.
Why Do Churches and Non-Profits Get Special Pricing?
We love working with non-profits and churches. Honestly, it's one of the most fulfilling parts of what we do.
These organizations serve their communities. Feeding families. Sheltering the homeless. Mentoring kids. Supporting people in crisis. They operate on tight budgets, rely on donations, and often defer building maintenance because every dollar they spend on their facility is a dollar that doesn't go to the people they serve.
We get that tradeoff, and we want to make it easier. When a church or non-profit contacts us about roofing work, we offer pricing that respects their mission and their budget. We want to help them protect the building so they can focus on protecting the people inside it.
Over the years, we've partnered with several non-profit organizations in the Greater Houston Area. Those partnerships have connected us with homeowners in crisis. People who needed a roof and had absolutely no way to pay for one. Some of those projects have become the most meaningful work of my career.

The Project That Says It All
I've told this story before. I'll keep telling it because it represents everything this company is about.
Ms. Jackson was referred to us through one of our non-profit partners after Hurricane Beryl damaged her home. She was going through chemotherapy. She had no money for repairs. And then her insurance company dropped her coverage. During chemo. With a damaged roof over her head.
We installed a full FORTIFIED roof on her home. Thirty-year architectural shingles. Complete plywood decking. Built to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard for maximum storm resistance. The entire project was completed at zero cost to Ms. Jackson.
After the new roof went in, she was able to get homeowner's insurance again. And at a discounted rate because of the FORTIFIED designation. Her home went from uninsurable and exposed to fully protected and covered at a lower premium than she'd had before the hurricane.
That project didn't show up on a profit-and-loss statement. It showed up somewhere more important. We care more about the relationships we build than the profits we make, and Ms. Jackson's story is the clearest example I can give of what that looks like in practice.
You can read more about financing and assistance options in our article on how to pay for a roof when you can't afford it.
What Verse Guides This Company?
There's a Bible verse I carry with me every day. Colossians 3:23:
"Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men."
To me, this verse means working as if I'm working directly for God. Striving to do it in a way that glorifies Him. Doing our work honestly and honorably while putting forth our absolute best effort. I carry this with me every day.
That's not something I say to impress anyone. It's the lens I look through when I'm making decisions about this business. When I'm on a roof deciding whether a repair detail is "good enough," I ask myself: would this be good enough if I were doing it for God? When I'm quoting a job: is this price honest? When a homeowner asks whether they need a full replacement or just a repair: what would I tell them if I had nothing to gain from their answer?
The answer to that last question is always the same. If repairs make sense, I offer those options first. I let homeowners know that repairs could buy them a certain number of years so they can plan and budget for a new roof. I'm not going to sell someone a $15,000 reroof to make my quarter if a $500 repair will protect their home for another five years. That's not how I want to operate.
What Does FORTIFIED Certification Actually Mean?
One of the ways we bring that service mentality to the technical side is through FORTIFIED certification. The IBHS FORTIFIED program is a voluntary construction standard that goes above and beyond code. It creates roofs that are significantly more resistant to high winds, hail, and wind-driven rain.
As a certified FORTIFIED installer, we've completed specialized training on enhanced installation techniques. Sealed roof decks. Reinforced flashing systems. Impact-rated materials. Connection details that keep the roof attached to the structure when conditions get extreme.
For Houston homeowners, a FORTIFIED roof means:
- Superior storm protection in a region that gets hammered by severe weather year after year
- Insurance discounts, often 25% or more off annual premiums
- A longer roof lifespan because the installation exceeds minimum code
- Real peace of mind that your home is as protected as current building science allows
We also hold certifications from GAF, Tamko, Sika, Mulehide, Soprema, and Durolast. Those manufacturer certifications mean the companies that make the roofing materials have vetted our crews and will stand behind extended warranties on roofs we install. That's verifiable, not just a claim on a website.
Why Does 15 Years of Experience Matter?
I've been in the roofing industry for over 15 years. In that time I've seen every kind of roof, every kind of damage, and every kind of contractor. The good ones and the ones that give this industry its bad reputation.
The bad ones are the reason articles like this matter. When homeowners can't tell the difference between a contractor who genuinely cares and one who's just chasing a check, everyone suffers. The homeowner gets a bad roof. The industry loses credibility. And the contractors who do things right have to work harder to earn trust that should have been there in the first place.
Everything I do is aimed at being transparent and honest. I always give reasoning and explanations. If I tell you your flashing needs to be replaced, I'll show you why. If I tell you your roof has five more years of life, I'll explain what I'm seeing. If I say repairs won't cut it and you need a full replacement, I'll walk you through the evidence so you can see it for yourself.
You shouldn't have to take a roofer's word on blind faith. You should be able to see the same things we see and understand why we're recommending what we're recommending.
This Is Who We Are
Terzo Roofing isn't a company that slapped "veteran-owned" on the website because it polls well. It's a company built by a veteran who brought his training, his values, and his sense of duty into the roofing industry because he believed homeowners deserved better.
The discounts we offer to veterans, first responders, and churches aren't a marketing play. They're what we believe: the people who serve others deserve to be served in return.
The non-profit partnerships aren't a tax write-off exercise. They're how we put our values into action for homeowners who would otherwise fall through the cracks.
If that resonates with you, if you want to work with a contractor who sees your roof as more than a transaction, we'd be honored to earn your business.
We serve homeowners, churches, and commercial properties across the Houston metro area. Katy, Cypress, Sugar Land, Cinco Ranch, Sealy, Bellville, and beyond.
